Patrick Alberty- Writer & Filmmaker

WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?

I find that I’ve been influenced by a lot of writers and musicians: Poe, H.P. Lovecraft, and Phillip K. Dick as writers - people who tend to look at the play between our innermost selves and the pressures and dangers of the outside world - and VAST, Woodkid, and Ludovico Einaudi as musicians - those whose music can capture the wild tumult in my head and put it into song.

WHAT DO YOU FIND INSPIRING?

Thoughts are most inspiring to me. Watching people, seeing their internal process played out in an unintended, physical way is possibly the most interesting thing in the world, and while most prefer dialogue, I enjoy the silence instead; we have words to add drama & comedy to our lives, but the source of those words - the thoughts behind them - is far more revealing of their intent and ultimately each of us as a person.

TELL US A FUNNY STORY ABOUT YOURSELF.

While I tend to get made fun of for it, I tend to be a cautious person in general, preferring to think things out and plan ahead rather than just jump right in. This leads to many thinking I’m not terribly adventurous, which is not the case - I just prefer to know what adventure I’m getting into. This hasn’t always been however, and there are far too many stories I could tell to truly illustrate how long it took me to get to this point, but here now is the most tame story I can tell as all others would potentially paint me as a crazy person:

During my sophomore year of college, I was walking around campus when I see - from behind - someone who looked like a female friend of mine. I begin to follow her, calling out her name in the hopes that she would turn around, yet for some reason she wouldn’t do it. You would think that I could have figured it out relatively quickly, but I was intent and probably stupid so I continued to call out, getting louder and louder as we walked, no doubt turning heads of those who passed us by wondering who this person was and why they had someone screaming behind them.

At last, we reached the building where both of us would have had class. No more than 3 minutes had passed since I began my quest to get attention, but it felt like an eternity and my good humor was getting overrun by frustration. Finally, as we entered the building, I called out, “HEY, STUPID!” (which may seem mean, but it truly was something we called each other all the time - suffice to say, we’re merely acquaintances today). Finally, she turned around to reveal what all of you already knew from the second sentence of this story - it wasn’t her! But not only was it not her, it wasn’t a “her” to begin with, but rather a freshman guy who just happened to have gorgeous, flowing hair and dressed in a similar fashion to my friend. He turned to glare at me for obvious reasons and In the split second it took for me to realize my mistake, I immediately looked past him, contorting my face into an approximation of confusion as I uttered out loud, “Huh…where did she go?”, as if he and I had been having this whole conversation about where my real friend had gone and we had just suddenly lost her in a crowd. I quickly strode over to the stairs and up, hiding in the bathroom until I was sure he had gone away.

Wherever that man is today, I hope that he wasn’t offended and that his hair retains its luster to this very day.
