WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?
There is nothing more absurd, wondrous, gut-wrenching, and hopeful than the small occurrences of everyday life as each of us bump into each other, time, and space. All of that makes it's way into my work, because...as they say, you can't make that shit up.
WHAT DO YOU FIND INSPIRING?
Nothing makes me more excited than when a storyteller genuinely surprises me. If I'm watching or reading something and I think I know where we're going and then something wonderfully surprising happens instead or if I can never quite get a handle on where the journey is headed at all, I feel alive and exhilarated and inspired.
TELL US A FUNNY STORY ABOUT YOURSELF.
I was once housesitting for a neighbor in midtown and one night, when I was alone, this absolutely enormous cockroach started running around the living room. I mean, you have never seen a cockroach this big. In a battle between a mouse and this cockroach, I don't think the mouse could have been relied upon to win. Well, if it had just run across the floor once and then disappeared, I probably would have left well enough alone and tried to forget about it, but the thing kept running back and forth and eventually started sort of hanging out in the middle of the carpet. So finally, I thought, right, I can't let this go on. So I went and got a cup to trap it, but it started to run away right at the moment I slammed the cup down so that the rim of the cup wound up pinning his mid-section to the ground, both crushing his abdomen and trapping, but not killing, him. This was the worst possible scenario. If I lifted the cup, this freakishly large cockroach might run at me (and, in any event, with his abdomen in the state it was, he was as good as dead already), but additionally, the curvature of the cup was such that I couldn't really get an angle to crush him properly and put the poor thing out of his misery. My only real option, then, was to sit there, holding the cup down and wait for the wretched bug to die. So I sat there and looked at his eyes, which because of his size, I could clearly see. And he looked at me. And we both waited until he died. It was horrendous. An impossible moment that transcended species-ness. And, also, in retrospect, just a little bit funny.
