Serrana Gay- Producer & Performer

WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?

As a writer I am influenced by Hemingway and Junot Diaz in equal measure. This seems contradictory because they have such different styles, but that is exactly what inspires me. Hemingway strives for simplicity and finding the most sparse way to tell a story, while Diaz is full of slang and Spanish, and conveys culture and emotion with every sentence. Finding the balance of these two styles in my own writing has been a quest of mine. Also J. K. Rowling, Margaret Atwood and Tolkien are writers that have influenced me at different moments in my life.

Personally I have been influenced largely by both of my parents, because they taught me very early on that being an artist is a viable life choice. They not only encouraged me to follow that spark within myself but they led by example. And that made me believe that it is possible to have the life you want even if it is sometimes difficult.

WHAT DO YOU FIND INSPIRING?

I am inspired by the humans around me. Especially when I am on the train. I try to guess their stories and often my writing comes out of my observations. Also something about the movement of a train always sparks my creativity. I also find inspiration in nature and music.

When I was a kid my nickname was Serrana Piranha because I bit people... I still bite people...
