WHAT ARE YOUR INFLUENCES?
The National Storytelling Festival in Jonesboro, TN was where I fell in love with storytelling. Since then it's been a crazy journey down the rabbit hole. I'm influenced by: the stories of my Appalachian heritage, YOUR story, those who are chasing their dreams, traveling. People I dig: Dolly Parton, George Carlin, Sarah Ruhl, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Julie Taymor, Johnny Cash, Peter Brook, Quentin Tarantino, Tina Fey, Rod McKuen, ee cummings, Patti Smith, Alice Stewart, Helen Mirren, Kate Tempest. I also could not live or create anything without music.
WHAT DO YOU FIND INSPIRING?
The Stars. The Smokey Mountains. The South. The Blues. The Moon. MUSIC. MUSIC. MUSIC. Laughter. Dancing. Fall weather. Bonfires under a night sky. Dark seedy Honky Tonks. Artists. Did I mention music?
TELL US A FUNNY STORY ABOUT YOURSELF.
When I was a kid, I was a little crazy about the stars. I'd just stare at them for hours.... While stargazing, I used to always see the same three stars lined up in a row. In my child's mind, I thought that I had discovered these three stars and that I was the only person who could see them. I decided that these were my lucky stars and that if one ever disappeared, my luck would run out. For years I would obsessively check the sky for 'my stars', and always find them there. When I got a little older I found out - to much disappointment - that these three stars are actually a part of the Orion's Belt constellation and were not a secret at all. I was crushed for a few days, and then I became obsessed with the Moon and got over it. I still look for them when I look at the sky, though. They can still be my lucky stars, right?
