How would you describe the home/apartment you grew up in?
The house I grew up in is in the middle of the woods in the rural midwest. It was built by my parents and is their own design. I would say it is a carefully curated collection of items that represents the their lives. Almost everything in the house has a story about it and a reason for it to be there. Some would say its crowded with knickknacks but it is happy cozy house that is as much a part of our family and we are.
What was your experience of filming Home Bodies?
I loved the experience of working with Home Bodies! So many times as dancers we go in very plain studios or performance spaces and have to create world for our art to live in. It was such a new experience to dance as myself in my own personal space. And as we all know new experiences just make the art we produce better and better.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Elisabeth Martin is a native of Bloomington, Indiana. She started her training in 1996 in the Indiana University Pre-College Ballet Program under the direction of Doricha Sales. She attended high school at the Walnut Hill School in Natick, Mass. She then returned to the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music for college. In her time at IU, she has performed in a variety of productions, including Agnes De Mille’s Rodeo, Balanchine’s Serenade and Rubies, Dwight Rhoden’s Dear Frédéric, as Lead Snowflake, Lead Spanish and Lead Mirliton in The Nutcracker, and as a soloist in Balanchine’s Who Cares?. She was a award recipient in the Bloomington Chapter of the National Society of Arts and Letters competition in 2010 and 2012. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Ballet Performance with an Outside Field in Exercise Science and a Minor in Mathematics. She danced with the Rochester City Ballet after school, during which she has preformed numerous roles such as Christmas Spirit, Italian soloist, and Mirliton soloist, in The Nutcracker. She danced in RCB’s premier of Cityscapes, and Bill Evans new work For Tim, along with Balanchice’s Serenade. She also preformed with the company in their debut at Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival 2013. She choreographed and danced in the music video for Rochester band Routine Involvements, and The Finger Lakes Opera Company’s premier performance of Carmen. Since moving to New York in 2015 she has been part of short film my Nagisa Balanchine’s a with Leslie Browne, featuring choreography by Daniel Catanach. She danced in NYC fashion week for designer Cristina Ruales working with choreographer Sydney Schiff, has performed Paquita with the Victoria Ballet Theater, danced for Ballets With a Twist, and had work created on her by Tony Morales of Morales Dance.
